LEBRUN, Jean-Baptiste-Pierre. Gallery of Flemish, Dutch, and German Painters. A set of 38 engraved plates that beautifully illustrates the triumph of Northern European painting in 18th-century France. Paris, published by Cherreau and Basan & Poignant, 1777–1782. Folio size, half-shagreen with fir-green corners, ribbed spine, fir-green grained percaline covers, gilt head. 37 engraved and captioned plates and 4 title pages. Binding is scuffed with a stain on the front cover; faint water stains on the plates of the first suite; scattered foxing; a small tear and a small loss of paper in the side margin of two plates in the fifth installment. A collection of 38 large prints from the famous Galerie de Lebrun, consisting of: - First Series (1777): title page and its 12 engraved plates (complete). - Fourth Installment (1780): title page and 10 engraved plates out of 12. - Fifth Installment (1781): title page and 9 engraved plates out of 12. - Sixth Installment (1782): title page and 6 engraved plates out of 12. The engravings faithfully capture all the splendor of the Dutch Golden Age. Notably featured are a spectacular wild boar hunt by Frans Snyders and Peter Paul Rubens—a pinnacle of Flemish Baroque art—and pastoral landscapes animated by cows by Dirck van Bergen. Rembrandt admirers will also appreciate the inclusion of the engraved work “Vertumnus and Pomona” by his most brilliant pupil, Ferdinand Bol. The collection is further enhanced by the engravings of great masters of printmaking such as Guerin, Daudet, Guttenberg, and Dequevauviller. Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun (1748–1813) was a student of Boucher and Deshayes before abandoning painting to become an art dealer. When the Revolution broke out, he established himself as the most important art dealer in Paris.
