LA POPELINIÈRE, Lancelot Voisin de. The True and Complete History of the Troubles and Memorable Events That Occurred Both in France and in Flanders and the Surrounding Regions Since the Year 1562. A rare edition of this important account of the Wars of Religion that took place in France between 1562 and 1579, as recounted by a direct witness and participant in that bloody period. A fine copy in a good 18th-century binding. Basel [Caen], Barthelemy Germain [Pierre Le Chandelier], 1579. 18 books in 2 in-12 volumes (110x170 mm and 105x160 mm), full brown marbled calfskin, spine with guilloché raised bands, compartments decorated with fleurons and a scattering of gold dots, title and volume number labels in red and brown leather, gold roulette on the edges, red edges. 40 unnumbered folios (title page, epistle, table of contents) and 440 folios; 192 leaves, headbands, and initials. Minor scuffing; cap band missing at the bottom of the first volume; incipient cracks on the spines of both volumes; two scratches on the first volume and a tiny wormhole in the second volume. Rare and minimal foxing. New edition of this major chronicle of the Wars of Religion (1562–1579). Written by the Protestant captain Lancelot Voisin de La Popelinière (c. 1541–1608), this work is considered by historians to be one of the principal firsthand sources. The author himself fought in the Huguenot ranks for fifteen years and notably commanded the expedition against the Île de Ré in 1574. Bookplate on the title pages (a diamond-shaped wet stamp bearing the monogram “B.D.” on laminated laid paper). A fine copy, complete in two attractively bound volumes. Uncommon.
