HENRIET, Frédéric. C. Daubigny and His Engraved Works. First edition of this reference catalog, complete with its engraved plates. Paris, A. Lévy, 1875. Quarto, paperback, filled cover, in a later brown shagreen slipcase with corners, spine with faux raised bands and gilt title. 207 pp., engraved frontispiece portrait and 7 plates. Spine of the cover restored, rare foxing, ink marks from the plates on the facing page as is often the case. First edition of the first catalog raisonné of the artist’s engravings. It is adorned with a frontispiece portrait engraved by Léon Lhermitte and 7 plates, including 1 original etching by Charles-François Daubigny (“Moonrise on the Banks of the Oise”), 2 etchings by Karl Daubigny after his father, 3 heliogravures by Amand Durand, and a reproduced woodcut. More than just a reference monograph, this edition is the result of an artistic partnership and an unwavering friendship spanning a quarter of a century. Frédéric Henriet (1826–1918), a close confidant of Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878), was a firsthand witness to the creation of his copper plates and the first to document his mentor’s work as an engraver. A profound sense of intimacy and remembrance thus permeates this publication, which closely involves the landscape painter’s son, Karl Daubigny, and their mutual friend Léon Lhermitte. A fine copy on laid paper, preserved in a slim later slipcase.
