DIDEROT, Denis, and NAUDIN, Bernard. *Le Neveu de Rameau*, based on the original manuscript published by Georges Monval. Illustrations by Bernard Naudin. One of Bernard Naudin’s finest works, in a full vellum binding adorned with an original, signed design. Paris, Auguste Blaizot, 1924. In-4 Bradel-style (235 x 310 mm), full ivory vellum, smooth spine adorned with two small original wash drawings featuring the monogram B.N. in full-length portrait and the title embossed in blind on a piece of brown leather; on the front cover, a large original composition in black pencil and red chalk, signed by Bernard Naudin and dated November 1936, depicting Rameau’s nephew leaning on his table with a violin hanging in the background; linings and endpapers of orange moiré silk, gilt head on endpapers, cover and spine preserved, half-maroquin slipcase with ivory vellum flaps and a case. XI and 197 pages, 40 illustrations including 4 etchings and 36 intaglio-engraved drawings. Minor scuffing and slight marks on the back cover and spine of the slipcase; very slight fading in the etchings. An excellent illustrated edition of Diderot’s masterpiece, based on the original manuscript published by Georges Monval. It is adorned with 40 illustrations by Bernard Naudin, including 4 original etchings—among them the frontispiece title page and a remarkable portrait of the author as a separate plate— as well as 36 drawings in black and red chalk, finely engraved in intaglio by Maurice Potin, including 32 full-page plates and one double-page composition. “One of Naudin’s finest illustrations,” according to Carteret (IV, 139). Limited edition of 356 copies; this is one of the 300 numbered copies on Rives vellum (no. 151). An exceptional copy distinguished by its full-vellum binding, “personalized” by the artist himself with a large, dated, and signed composition. In excellent condition.
