CORNARIUS, Janus. *Twenty Books of Selected Teachings on Agriculture by Emperor Constantine*, translated by Janus Cornarius, physician. A 16th-century edition of the Geoponika, an encyclopedia of ancient agricultural science that codifies, in twenty books, the entirety of Greco-Roman and Byzantine agronomic knowledge. No place, no publisher, no date [Basel, Froben, 1538]. In-12, midnight blue half-percale, smooth spine. 389 pp. In Latin. Spine slightly sun-faded; title page and final leaf with the printer’s mark are missing; first 7 leaves trimmed; water stain on lower margin. The leaf containing pages 385–386 has been reattached and is partially detached. Latin edition published by Janus Cornarius and reprinted from the Venetian edition of the same year. The treatise methodically covers all aspects of domestic economy: soil selection, weather forecasting, viticulture and oenology (grape varieties, winemaking), olive cultivation, horticulture, and grafting techniques. The final books are devoted to pest control, animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, beekeeping (Book XV), and fish farming (Book XX). A crucial account of land cultivation in antiquity. A study copy in a modest early 20th-century binding, bearing a label from the Parisian bookstore Raymond Clavreuil on the back cover.
