CHEVALIER, Maurice. *Tempes grises*. First edition. A copy belonging to André Maurois, containing a manuscript by the Academician and featuring a dedicatory inscription. Paris, Julliard - Sequana, 1948. Small 8vo, brown half-maroquin with corners edged in gold fillets, spine with two broad false raised bands, gilt head, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved. 239 pp. Spine slightly sun-faded. First edition of the third part of *Ma route et mes chansons*, a monumental 10-volume autobiography that Maurice Chevalier (1888–1972) published between 1946 and 1969. Limited edition of 220 copies on white vellum. From the library of André Maurois, featuring his beautiful bookplate engraved by Raoul Serres after a design by Henri Mondor. It is enhanced by a signed autograph dedication dated 1949: “To Madame Simone André Maurois. From a great friend and a minor writer.” The copy is interspersed with a signed autograph manuscript by André Maurois (one and a half pages, quarto size, on lined paper with a few cross-outs and corrections): “And all of this makes for excellent French,” a review of the publication of *Tempes grises* that appeared in his column “Les propos littéraires d’André Maurois.” The newspaper clipping of the article was cut out and pasted at the beginning of the book. It also contains an autographed card signed by Maurice Chevalier addressed to Madame André Maurois (one page, in-12, on the back of a postcard showing Chevalier at his villa “La Louque” in Cannes, November 6, 1946, with envelope). Busy in the studio, he apologizes for being unable to accept an invitation and promises to make time soon: “I’ll arrive with a heart as open as my appetite.” This copy, in fine condition and well-bound, has an excellent provenance.
