[MAP - MADAGASCAR] GRANDIDIER, Guillaume. Madagascar and its dependencies, based on the most recent geographical research. A rare and impressive canvas-mounted map of Madagascar, drawn during the first half of the 20th century by Guillaume Grandidier and A. Hauserman, and engraved in color by Hauserman. Paris, Forest and Société d’Éditions géographiques, maritimes et coloniales, circa 1920–1930. A color map composed of 42 panels mounted on canvas, with a total size of 97 x 175 cm. Slight browning along the margins and on the back of the canvas. A rare map of Madagascar and its dependencies, compiled in the early 20th century based on the most recent geographical research by Guillaume Grandidier, in collaboration with cartographer Jules Hansen, and engraved in color by A. Hausermann. The title insert specifies the various land and maritime features shown on the map and the symbols used to indicate them: railroads, roads, trails, and shipping lanes marked by black or red lines; various bodies of water (rivers, shoals and reefs, shallows, etc.), lighthouses and beacons, peaks, the names of regions, cities, and mountains, as well as various elevations indicated by a color code. In the lower right corner is a miniature map of Madagascar’s administrative divisions. A label from the map publisher Forest is laminated to the back of the canvas, with the title and scale 1/1,000,000 written by hand; it bears the stamp of the Société de la Grande Île, a public limited company for colonization in Madagascar, founded on Sept. 23, 1902, which owned approximately 109,000 hectares of forest and open land in Madagascar located near settlements, along railroad lines, and in various parts of the island. In very fine condition.
