Normal wear and tear on the binding, some foxing. Louis Denis (1725–1794), geographer to the King and engraver, was a pioneer of the modern travel guide. Specializing in road mapping, he remains famous for *Le Conducteur Français*, published from 1776 to 1780, which cataloged stagecoach routes throughout the kingdom. The volume is particularly notable for its large, finely enhanced map of the Paris-Soissons route. Two maps of France (including one by Desnos) as well as a table of distances between the kingdom’s major cities have been mounted on the front endpaper and its flyleaf, while a watercolor double-hemisphere world map occupies the lower endpaper and its flyleaf. A well-preserved copy.
