[BUONACCORSI, Filippo]. *De bello Turcis inferendo*, a most weighty oration, and most timely for the present circumstances. Also, by the same author, *Historia*, concerning the Venetians’ attempts to incite the Persians and Tartars against the Turks… First collected edition and first Alsatian printing of this important Renaissance geopolitical treatise on the Ottoman question. Haganoae [Haguenau], from the Seceriana press [Jean Setzer], February 1533. In-8, black half-basane with corners edged with a gilt garland, smooth spine decorated with triple gilt fillets and fleurons, burgundy leather title label. Later binding (late 18th–early 19th century). 90 ff. (the first 2 folios without signature marks, then the quires signed from B to Ziii, the last folio of the colophon bearing a typographic mark), engraved title page and initials. Binding rubbed; leather corner pieces, one of which is missing; small loss of paper and leather on the lower cover; slight water stain on the upper margin of a few leaves. First collective edition and first Alsatian printing. It brings together for the first time the *Oratio* (published in 1524 in Kraków) and the *Historia*, augmented with contributions by the Strasbourg humanist Nikolaus Gerbel (c. 1485–1560) at the publisher’s request. A beautiful Renaissance-style woodcut typographic print featuring a title page adorned with a large architectural frame with a portico and large initials with cherubs. Filippo Buonaccorsi (1437–1496), known as Callimachus Experiens, an Italian diplomat residing in Poland, presents a major geopolitical treatise advocating for a Christian coalition against the Ottoman Empire. In it, he details the Republic of Venice’s strategy aimed at forging a rear alliance with the Persians and the Tartars in order to catch the Turks off guard. A copy virtually free of foxing.
