[BIBLIOPHILIA] QUÉRARD, Joseph-Marie. *The Disguised Authors of 19th-Century French Literature*. A bibliographic essay intended as a supplement to A.-A. Barbier’s research on works published under pseudonyms. First edition of this rare bibliography of literary pseudonyms by Joseph-Marie Quérard; a copy from the library of the Stendhal scholar Adolphe Paupe (1854–1917), who added a handwritten note on the author. Paris, Au bureau du bibliothécaire, 1845. Bradel-bound 8vo (155 x 235 mm), full black percaline, smooth spine decorated with the title and a double gilt line. 84 pages, black title vignette. Scuffing on the head and foot bands, edges, and corners, and a slight tear at the top. Faint foxing, mainly on the first and last leaves. First edition of this bibliography listing various 19th-century literary pseudonyms and the names of the authors who used them, the most sought-after work by the bibliographer Joseph-Marie Quérard (1796–1865). This copy comes from the library of Stendhal scholar Adolphe Paupe (1854–1917), bearing his bookplate “Stendhal for ever” on the title page. Paupe added a lengthy biographical note on the author, excerpted from the Larousse dictionary, written in ink on a double-sided page, dated December 16, 1915, and signed with his monogram A.P. It also includes the purchase invoice for the book, dated March 20, 1912, addressed to Alfred Paupe by the bookseller and expert A. Foy, along with the postal receipt. The interior is clean and in fresh condition.
