BARBIER, George, and BOYLESVE, René. *The Carriage with the Two Green Lizards*. A fairy tale illustrated with watercolors by George Barbier. First illustrated edition, featuring 61 delicate Art Deco compositions by Georges Barbier, colored using stencils. A copy on Arches laid paper in a charming period binding with a mosaic spine. Paris, La Guirlande, 1921. In-4 (290 x 195 mm), pine-green half-maroquin with bands, smooth spine adorned with two broad faux ribs at the top and bottom highlighted with cold tooling, central mosaic motif in brown morocco leather set within a geometric design of blind-stamped and gilt fillets, title and author labels in ochre morocco leather, covers in green marbled paper, linings and endpapers in the same paper, gilt head on endpapers, covers and spine preserved. Approximately 100 pages (unnumbered), 61 illustrations including 8 hors-texte etchings in the margin, 40 drawings reproduced in the text, vignettes, and tailpieces. Spine very slightly faded, minimal scuffing, a few slight fading spots on the illustrations. First edition illustrated by Georges Barbier (1882–1932) with 61 striking compositions stencil-colored by Jean Saudé, including 8 separate etchings and 40 drawings within the text. Limited edition of 300 copies; this one is one of 225 numbered copies on Arches laid paper (No. 180). Dedicated to his friend, the critic Gonzague Truc, this modern tale by René Boylesve expresses his postwar disillusionment by contrasting ancestral traditions with scientific progress. The story ends with the fairy-tale wedding of the heroine, Gillonne, who flies away in a carriage drawn by giant lizards. George Barbier’s illustrations, with their sinuous lines and quintessentially Art Deco elegance, perfectly complement the dreamlike atmosphere of this modern fairy tale. From the library of Jean-Claude Chalanson, a passionate collector of illustrated books from the Art Deco period (bookplate on the endpaper). A very fine copy, beautifully presented.
