[AFRICA - ETHNOLOGY] TAUXIER, Louis. The Black Man of Bondoukou. Koulangos - Dyoulas - Abrons - etc. First edition of this comprehensive study, essential for understanding the colonial and anthropological history of Côte d'Ivoire. Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1921. In-4, brown morocco-impressed half-leather with corner caps, spine with fine raised bands, covers and spine preserved. Binding signed “Ateliers Lardanchet.” XII and 770 pp., 24 plates of photographic reproductions on coated paper. Original blue cover partially sun-faded (as is often the case), paper slightly discolored at the margins. First edition. While stationed in the region, administrator Louis Tauxier (1871–1942) conducted a study focused on the province of Bondoukou, a major historical and commercial hub in West Africa. The second part of his research revolves around extensive appendices that form a database of rare depth: complete village-by-village census tables (indicating the number of inhabitants and their racial distribution), in-depth studies on social organization, the history of chiefdoms (the Abrons, the Koulangos), the spread of Islam among the Dyoulas, as well as local legal and religious customs. A fine copy, well bound by the Lardanchet workshops.
