British Glengarry. Made of navy blue wool cloth with a full black/white/red check pattern. The back straps are intact. The Royal Scots cap badge, mounted on black tartan. Double lining in black cotton fabric; remaining markings are illegible. Note some wear and patina on the item, as well as a few signs of moth damage. Condition II+. At the start of World War II, the 1st Battalion was stationed at Aldershot and was part of the 4th Infantry Brigade of the British 2nd Division; it was deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force. In September 1939, the two reserve battalions of the Royal Scots—the 7/9th and the 8th—were mobilized in Scotland. The 7/9th was briefly deployed to France before the French surrender in 1940, after which it was withdrawn. A fifth battalion, the 12th, was then formed in 1940. In 1941, the 2nd Battalion, which had been fighting in Asia, was sent to defend Hong Kong, but following the Japanese attack on the city, the 2nd surrendered on Christmas Day after fighting bravely. The 12th Battalion, which had been newly formed, then lost its designation and resumed the name 2nd Battalion in May 1942. In 1943, this battalion was deployed to Gibraltar before being sent to participate in the Italian Campaign. In June 1945, it was redeployed to Palestine and then along the Suez Canal. The 8th Battalion was incorporated into the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division and landed in Normandy on June 6 before taking part in the entire Western European campaign. The 7/9th, meanwhile, was an integral part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division, trained in mountain warfare and airborne operations. It was deployed to the Netherlands in October 1944 and took part in the Battle of the Scheldt. British Glengarry. Made of navy blue wool cloth with a complete black, white, and red chequered band.
