Satyr-shaped wall sconce; Rome, 1st–2nd centuries AD. Bronze. Measurements: 3.5 x 3 x 1 cm. Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. Roman bronze wall sconce with a circular front, featuring a relief depiction of a face with a large beard, suggesting the representation of a satyr. A classic mythological figure commonly associated with the court of the god Bacchus. The concave reverse side lacks any fastening elements, architectural or otherwise. Pieces of this type were very common in the Roman Empire, but also in other cultures that had direct or indirect contact with the Romans.
