Two appliqués and a piece of a cauldron. Roman Empire, 2nd–3rd centuries A.D. Bronze. Measurements: 6 x 3 cm (largest piece). Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. This piece previously belonged to the O.C. private collection (Madrid). Lot consisting of three bronze pieces: two are male heads, and the third is a cauldron fragment shaped like a theater mask. The three pieces offer a small glimpse into the variety of uses bronze had in the Roman Empire. Great bronze casters produced both life-size (or even larger-than-life) equestrian sculptures and small figures for private devotion.
