Spout from a water jug; Rome, 1st–2nd centuries A.D. Bronze. Measurements: 10 x 6 cm; 11 cm with base. Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. Weight: 107 g. Spout of a Roman water jug, dated approximately to the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., made of hollow bronze. It features a depiction of a horse’s head through which water was poured; the horse’s neck bears three bridle-shaped ornaments, and at its base is a male figure with a prominent mustache. Based on its craftsmanship, it appears to originate from the region of ancient Gaul. It is, therefore, an unusual piece, since in most cases, this type of ewer with a spout was made only for religious motifs or for prominent figures and dignitaries; a simple jug was much more commonly used for such purposes. It comes from an important English archaeological collection.
