Multifaceted seal of Persian origin. 3rd–7th centuries B.C. 3rd–7th centuries B.C. Hematite. Weight: 11 grams. Height: 25 mm. Provenance: Family bequest of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through acquisitions at European galleries and auction houses. A multifaceted Bactrian seal dating from the Persian period, spanning the 3rd to 7th centuries B.C. Crafted from hematite, it is carved in bas-relief on all five sides and features a ring at the top for suspension by a cord. The faces depict a horse, a gazelle, a bust, a rabbit, and a scorpion. Seals of this type were common in this culture; what is unusual is the depiction of five different animals, since they are typically carved on only one face, not five. An alginate cast of each side of the seal is included so that its details can be appreciated.
