Mother Goddess. Indus Valley Civilization, ca. 2600–2500 B.C. Terracotta. Measurements: 12 x 4 x 7 cm. Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. A statuette in the round depicting a Mother Goddess, with prominent breasts and hips, a large face with stylized features, and a headdress and necklaces decorated with a dotted pattern. The Indus Valley Civilization was a Bronze Age civilization that flourished between 3300 and 1300 BCE in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, along the Indus River valley. It encompassed about a hundred settlements and two major cities: Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Taken together, it covered the largest area of any ancient civilization—more than one million square kilometers. It developed a writing system and also produced jewelry, pottery, and terracotta figurines.
