Statuette of Mercury; Roman Empire, 1st–3rd centuries B.C. Bronze. Measurements: 5 cm tall. Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through acquisitions at European galleries and auction houses. This piece previously belonged to a private collection in Germany, assembled between 1960 and 1972. Roman bronze statuette in the style of full-relief, depicting the god Mercury. He was the god of commerce, son of Jupiter and Maia Maiestas, and although his origins can be traced back to the Etruscan god Turms, most of his characteristics, such as his mythology, were derived from his Greek counterpart, Hermes.
