Pair of clasps; Rome, 1st–2nd centuries A.D. Bronze. Measurements: 9.5 x 1 x 2 cm. Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. Weight: 86 g (both). Pair of bronze clasps for a Roman chest, dating from the 1st to 2nd centuries A.D. They feature a slender shank with a trapezoidal cross-section, with fluted decoration on the lower part and a base on the upper part, atop which is the figure of a dog’s head. This is the typical “CAVE CANEM” type of clasp, in which the depiction of dog heads was intended to warn any intruder to stay away from the chest they were protecting. At the top, they feature a ring for fastening, and on the lower rear part, both have a bronze square through which the locking bar would slide. It is difficult to find a matching pair, as typically no more than a single piece is ever found. From an important Spanish archaeological collection.
