Opium mortar. Rajasthan, 16th–17th centuries. Yellow stone from Jaisalmer. Measurements: 7 x 20.5 x 10.3 cm. Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. The mortar, used for grinding opium, is oval in shape and decorated at one of its short ends with the head of a tiger or lion. These are two animals traditionally associated with valor, strength, and courage, which sometimes even take on an apotropaic—that is, protective—meaning, which is why their images are commonly found on the doors of temples and private residences. In this case, the object is associated with the upper class—the Rajput nobility of Rajasthan. The piece is carved from Jaisalmer stone, which has a beautiful yellow-orange hue.
