Fragment of a stele. Kingdom of Rajasthan, 16th century. Sandstone. Measurements: 14.5 x 10 x 5 cm; 27 x 10 x 5 cm (measured with base). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. A devotional sculptural fragment carved from reddish sandstone, representative of the artistic tradition of Rajasthan, one of the major centers of sculptural production in northern India. The composition depicts a seated male deity, wearing an elaborate conical headdress, holding a smaller female figure on his lap. Both figures are set within an architectural frame of curvilinear contours, with a volumetric treatment that accentuates their presence and expressiveness. The depiction alludes to the images of divine couples characteristic of Hindu iconography, in which the union of the deities symbolizes the complementarity of the masculine and feminine principles. Notable features include the sculptural quality of the bodies, the expressiveness of the faces, and the rich nuances of the stone surface, marked by an attractive patina of age. Religious sculpture in Rajasthan underwent remarkable development thanks to the patronage of the Rajput dynasties, which promoted the construction and ornamentation of numerous Hindu and Jain temples. In these architectural complexes, depictions of deities served both an ornamental and a spiritual function, forming part of elaborate iconographic programs. This piece stands as an evocative testament to this sculptural tradition, characterized by a combination of religious symbolism, formal expressiveness, and a profound decorative sensibility.
