Wall sconce featuring the face of Medusa; Rome, 2nd–3rd centuries A.D. Bronze. Measurements: 4.5 x 5 cm; 6 cm (height including base). Provenance: Family legacy of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection formed from the 1950s by successive generations of the family, through acquisitions in European galleries and auction houses. The face of Medusa, depicted frontally and with powerful expressiveness, is the focal point of this small Roman bronze appliqué. The head, designed to be viewed from the front, condenses within its small dimensions a range of features that made Medusa one of the most recognizable and enduring motifs in classical iconography. In the Roman world, the image of Medusa became extraordinarily widespread as an apotropaion—that is, as a motif intended to protect against evil forces and ward off danger through the very representation of the terrifying. Her image frequently appears in architecture, furniture, weaponry, luxury objects, and decorative elements, where her presence was not merely ornamental but embodied a powerful protective meaning. This piece, cast in bronze and designed as an applied element, is fully in keeping with this tradition. The metalwork allows one to appreciate with particular clarity the articulation of the facial features, the rendering of the hair, and, especially, the care given to the outer rim of the piece. These details highlight the high technical quality achieved by Roman workshops specializing in the production of small bronze objects and decorative elements.
