GIUSEPPE GAMBOGI (Italy, 1862–1938) “Young Woman Leaning on a Vase.” Signed. It has fractures on some of the fingers and a crack at waist level. Measurements: 43 x 15 x 15 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Giuseppe Gambogi presents a sculpture that fully embodies the refined taste of the Belle Époque, at a time of transition between the final expressions of Romanticism and the modernist sensibility of Art Nouveau. The idealization of the female figure, the restrained sensuality of the forms, the fluidity of the lines, and the pronounced ornamental element place the piece within a sculptural movement particularly prized by the European bourgeoisie of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Giuseppe Gambogi, who spent part of his career in Paris and participated in the French salons, gained recognition for this type of sculpture, characterized by its elegant design and meticulous craftsmanship.
