Gothic capital; 14th–15th centuries. Carved stone. Measurements: 29 x 25 x 26 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Featuring a highly sculptural plant motif. It displays a double crown of stylized leaves arranged in overlapping tiers, along with vertical leaf motifs that accentuate the piece’s upward movement. The carving combines sinuous contours and well-defined volumes, creating an interesting contrast of light and shadow that enhances the sculptural character of the piece. Due to its formal characteristics, the piece is akin to the Gothic sculptural tradition developed in Catalonia during the 14th and 15th centuries. Notable points of comparison include the architectural capitals preserved at the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants in Girona, as well as the medieval examples housed at the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona—collections of great interest for studying the evolution of ornamental styles in Catalan sculpture.
