Gothic capital; 14th century. Carved stone. Measurements: 33 x 25 x 26 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Medieval carved stone capital, designed as an architectural element bridging the column shaft and the structure it supports. It features an ornamental composition combining geometric and plant motifs, rendered through stylized forms and schematic carving, in which decorative synthesis takes precedence. The piece is part of the tradition of 14th-century Gothic architectural sculpture, characterized by the adaptation of ornamental motifs to the volume and structural function of the capital. Its formal language finds a stylistic parallel in an example preserved at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), inventory no. 157287-000, although this example stands out for its more synthetic and schematic interpretation of the decorative motifs.
