Composite capital Carved stone. Measurements: 35 x 49 x 38 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. An architectural capital carved from stone, with a truncated conical profile and a vegetal ornamental design. It features rich relief decoration, composed of large acanthus leaves, palmette motifs, and stylized vegetal elements that unfold across the various faces of the piece. In the upper section, the composition is organized around a central foliate motif, flanked by curved forms and Ionic-inspired volutes, while the lower section features acanthus leaves with pronounced veins and sculptural modeling. The ornamental structure reflects the tradition of the Composite order, characterized by the combination of elements from the Ionic and Corinthian orders. The carving, with its pronounced relief and three-dimensional treatment, lends the piece a striking interplay of light and shadow. The irregularities and visible losses along the upper edges, along with surface wear, reflect the piece’s current state of preservation. The Composite Order constitutes one of the principal contributions of Roman architecture to the classical tradition. Its monumental development is documented in imperial architecture, especially from the late 1st century CE onward, as well as in its architectural language. During the 4th–6th centuries, ornamentation with classical roots continued to play a prominent role in civil and religious buildings, both in the late Roman world and in territories linked to the Byzantine world. In this context, the plant motifs inherited from imperial architecture underwent simplifications, reinterpretations, and the development of new relief designs.
