RAMON MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894). "Rural Landscape." Oil on panel. Signed “R. Martí” in the lower right corner. In good condition. Shows superficial changes consistent with its age. Measurements: 26.5 × 34 cm; 46 × 54 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Representative of the realist revival in landscape painting spearheaded by Ramon Martí Alsina, this work condenses into a small format the freedom of execution and direct observation of nature that defined his contribution to 19th-century Catalan painting. The artist constructs the landscape using energetic, distinctly textural brushstrokes, integrating terrain, vegetation, and architecture into a unified and vibrant vision. The palette of ochres, earth tones, and muted greens accentuates the rugged character of the setting, while the sky, rendered with greater lightness, introduces depth and atmospheric hallmarks. The impasto and changes in the direction of the brushstrokes shift the focus from meticulous description to the immediate perception of nature—an essential aspect of the modern conception of landscape developed by Martí Alsina. Ramon Martí Alsina trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he went on to serve as a professor of line drawing and later as a full professor of figure drawing. He was one of the key figures in the introduction of Realism in Catalonia and one of the great innovators of 19th-century Catalan landscape painting. He regularly participated in exhibitions in Barcelona, Paris, and Madrid and received, among other honors, a third medal at the 1858 National Fine Arts Exhibition and a second medal in 1860 for *Landscape of Catalonia*, now in the Prado Museum. His work is held in institutions such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
