Early 19th-century Dutch school. “Rural Landscape.” Oil on canvas. Measurements: 22.5 x 29 cm; 31 x 36 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The serenity of rural life and the prominence of nature define this composition, which is rooted in the Dutch landscape tradition. The scene features a modest rural structure sheltered beneath a group of slender trees, next to which small figures can be seen, introducing a subtle narrative dimension. The composition opens onto a vast plain, framed by a path that guides the viewer’s gaze toward the horizon. The sky takes center stage thanks to the presence of expansive cloud formations, rendered through delicate gradations of whites, blues, and golden hues. Both the choice of subject and its atmospheric sensibility reflect the continuity of the naturalist tradition in Dutch landscape painting during the early decades of the 19th century.
