RAMON MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894). "Seascape." Oil on canvas. Signed “R. Martí” in the lower left corner. Restored. Measurements: 36.5 × 98.5 cm; 49 × 111 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The panoramic scope and the attention paid to the effects of light and atmosphere place this seascape squarely within one of Ramon Martí Alsina’s most representative styles. The artist reduces the human presence to tiny figures perched on the rocks, subordinating them to the immensity of the sea and the sky. The low horizon line and the format’s pronounced horizontal extension intensify the sense of open space and stillness. The composition contrasts the dark, textured mass of the coastline with a sea surface of green and bluish tones that gradually blend into the luminosity of the horizon. The sky, rendered in grays, light ochres, and veiled whites, occupies a large part of the pictorial field and constitutes the scene’s true atmospheric element. In contrast to the painter’s other, more turbulent seascapes, here a serene perception of the coastline prevails, based on variations in light and direct observation of nature. Ramon Martí Alsina was a pivotal figure in Spanish Realism and one of the great innovators of 19th-century Catalan landscape painting. Trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he later served as an instructor and professor, he championed the direct study of nature and exerted a fundamental influence on artists such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Francesc Torrescassana. His trips to Paris allowed him to become acquainted with contemporary French painting and, in particular, the realism of Gustave Courbet. He won a third-place medal at the 1858 National Exhibition of Fine Arts and a second-place medal in 1860 for *Landscape of Catalonia*. His work is represented, among other institutions, at the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
