RAMON MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894). "River Landscape" Oil on canvas. Signed “R. Martí y Alsina” in the lower right corner. In good overall condition. Shows some cracking consistent with its age. Measurements: 50 × 74 cm; 63 × 88 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The breadth of the view and the study of light effects place this work squarely within the renewal of Catalan landscape painting spearheaded by Ramon Martí Alsina during the 19th century. The artist organizes the composition around a stream that opens up toward the distance, framed on both sides by clusters of trees and rock formations. The small figure standing near the bank introduces a human scale without detracting from nature’s absolute prominence. The painting combines a denser, more energetic brushwork in the trees, rocks, and foreground with a progressively lighter treatment of the water, mountains, and sky. The reflections on the river and the luminosity of the horizon create a sense of depth, while the alternation between shaded areas and patches of sky lends the scene a marked atmospheric quality. This attention to nature and to variations in light constitutes one of the essential features of Martí Alsina’s landscape painting, which moves away from idealized construction to seek a more immediate perception of the environment. Ramon Martí Alsina was a pivotal figure in Spanish Realism and one of the great innovators of Catalan landscape painting. He trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he later served as an instructor and professor, and advocated for the direct study of nature as the foundation of painting practice. His travels to Paris allowed him to become acquainted with contemporary French painting and, in particular, the realism of Gustave Courbet. He won a third-place medal at the 1858 National Exhibition of Fine Arts and a second-place medal in 1860 for *Landscape of Catalonia*. His teaching influenced artists such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Francesc Torrescassana, and his work is preserved in institutions such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
