British school, mid-19th century, circa 1860. "Lakeside Landscape with Figures in a Boat." Oil on canvas. Signed, with an illegible signature, in the lower left corner. Restored. On the reverse, stamp of the London canvas manufacturer R. Davis, active between 1857 and 1870. Measurements: 33.5 × 61 cm; 40 × 68 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The painting belongs to the tradition of mid-19th-century British landscape painting, which was particularly interested in depicting the lakes and mountainous landscapes of the British Isles. Its execution, characterized by loose brushwork and a special attention to lighting effects, combines naturalistic observation with a picturesque conception of the landscape. Of particular significance is the stamp preserved on the reverse of the canvas, belonging to the London supplier Robert Davis, who is documented between 1857 and 1870; this allows the work to be contextualized both materially and chronologically.
