MODEST URGELL I INGLADA (Barcelona, 1839–1919). Procession at Dusk. Oil on canvas. Signed “Urgell” in the lower right corner. Shows signs of restoration and areas where the paint layer is missing. Measurements: 60 × 100 cm; 86 × 125 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The twilight atmosphere and the presence of a procession before a solitary building bring together some of the most characteristic motifs of Modest Urgell, a key figure in 19th-century Catalan landscape painting. The composition is structured around a vast open space leading toward a stone building situated in the center, in front of whose entrance a small procession has gathered. The sky occupies a large part of the canvas and is rendered using a restrained palette of ochres, grays, and pinks, illuminated by the final rays of the setting sun. Urgell contrasts the almost empty expanse of the foreground with the narrative intensity of the procession and the architecture, reduced practically to silhouettes. The result is a scene in which the landscape takes on an emotional and evocative dimension, going beyond a mere topographical description. This universe of hermitages, cemeteries, processions, and twilight horizons constitutes precisely one of the most personal themes in his body of work. Modest Urgell i Inglada trained at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona, in the circle of Ramon Martí Alsina, and later furthered his education in Paris, where he became acquainted with the work of Gustave Courbet. He specialized in landscapes with a pronounced atmospheric quality, featuring cemeteries, isolated chapels, and twilight scenes that would come to define an immediately recognizable artistic language. He taught Perspective and Landscape at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona and founded the Artistic and Literary Society of Barcelona. He participated in exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Munich, Brussels, Berlin, Philadelphia, and Chicago. His work is represented in the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, which also houses important landscapes and drawings by the artist.
