THE FRIED FISH - c. 1900 Rare sign from a guinguette or restaurant, original domed enamel plaque with embossed lettering. 50 x 25.3 cm. Good condition - The curved relief of the plate enhances the dynamism of the design. The surface retains its beautiful original luster, highlighting the neat, embossed navy blue lettering. Note: a minor chip in the lower right corner, which does not affect the visual appeal. A lovely and particularly unique piece for any collection. The finely executed central design depicts a trout leaping out of the water, flanked by a lush garland of yellow water irises. A direct testament to the golden age of riverside cafés in the early 20th century, this sign perfectly illustrates the popular folklore of Sunday lunches by the water. While “fried minnows” remained the standard dish, the depiction of a trout highlighted the expertise of the riverside inn or restaurant. Calling all fishing enthusiasts!
