LA VACHE QUI RIT - “FOR SALE HERE” - c.1925 - This is the very FIRST VERSION signed “Benjamin RABIER” - Very rare original double-sided enamel advertising sign with a square back. 53 x 49 cm. “Émaillerie Alsacienne de Strasbourg” Very good overall condition - Superb color vibrancy on both sides: the reds are vivid, the blues deep, and the black outline highlighting the famous cow provides a magnificent contrast. Beautiful original luster preserved. There are a few subtle chips along the outer edge and fine superficial scratches (more noticeable on one side). The black square rim shows some wear as well as a 3-cm cut, located solely on the edge and therefore completely invisible on the main faces. A beautiful example rarely offered at auction— An extremely rare first edition of this iconic piece created by Benjamin Rabier. This first version, produced by the Alsacienne de Strasbourg enamel workshop, masterfully surpasses subsequent editions with its wealth of exquisitely fine details: The cow’s design: Its intense red coat, enhanced by delicate orange and flesh-toned hues, is highlighted by a black outline that provides a striking contrast. Her expression is infinitely more mischievous and distinctive: the lines are bolder, her eyes subtly crinkled, her teeth visible, and her muzzle enriched with flesh-toned hues (which would become a simple solid white in the second version). The design is enhanced by a complex play of shadows that creates a strong sense of depth. The finesse of the details: The cheese boxes suspended as earrings reveal a much more complex design featuring lettering and additional colors.
