ASTRA MARGARINE - c. 1930 Original flat, rimmed enamel advertising sign, horizontal version. 97 x 40 cm. “Emaillerie Alsacienne Strasbourg” In very good condition - A beautiful piece in remarkable condition. The colors, with superb vibrancy, have retained all their intensity, particularly the bright, luminous reds, which are perfectly defined. The piece retains its original luster in optimal condition. There are simply three minor chips in the enamel located at three corners. Founded in 1912 by engineer Jean Motte (headquartered at 37 Rue de la Boëtie in Paris), the Astra Company opened its first factory in Yvetot to produce margarine marketed as an economical substitute for butter. In light of its commercial success, production was transferred in the early 1930s to a larger factory in Asnières-sur-Seine. After becoming part of the Unilever group, the company was renamed Astra Calvé and developed or acquired leading brands of fats and oils (Fruit d’Or, Végétaline, Puget, Bénédicta). The historic industrial site in Asnières was permanently closed by Unilever in June 2002. Seine-Maritime/Normandy
