LA COQUILLE SOAP - c. 1907 Signed “A. Yopky” Rare original lithographed advertising card featuring its ephemeris calendar 42 x 31 cm. “Imp. Tourangelle, Tours - Marseille; Ollivier. Representative in Marseille” In very fine condition— Featuring very vibrant colors. There are only slight signs of wear localized along the outer edges, which in no way detract from the superb overall quality of the lithograph. Founded around 1890 by Couret Frères (inventors of stamped soaps), the Savon La Coquille brand joined forces in 1916 with the Charles Morel company (La Bonne Mère) to found the Société Anonyme des Savons de Marseille, renamed Société Nouvelle in 1926. Production was then divided between two factories in Marseille: “La Marie Louise Antoinette” (Avenue de Saint-Just) and the site on Rue de Crimée (La Belle de Mai). This advertising card is a historical document representative of the prevailing ideas of the Belle Époque. This turn-of-the-century-style scene employs a marketing technique that was very common at the time but is now completely outdated: it features a washerwoman and a comic character to exaggerate the soap’s strength and cleaning power.
