ASTRA MARGARINE - c. 1920 Illustration based on a work by Edouard COURCHINOUX. Not credited. Very rare original domed enamel advertising sign. 23 x 14 cm. In absolutely exceptional condition— This authentic and rare domed enamel sign is in museum-quality condition, having likely never been installed. The enamel is of absolute perfection. The colors are fantastically well-preserved, revealing vivid reds of spectacular intensity and perfect clarity against a deep blue background. The surface displays optimal luster with a striking mirror-like effect. An original, antique piece of remarkable rarity, in a state of perfection that is extremely rare on the market. —A true masterpiece for the discerning collector— Founded in 1912 by engineer Jean Motte (headquartered at 37 Rue de la Boëtie in Paris), the Astra Company opened its first factory in Yvetot to produce margarine marketed as an economical substitute for butter. In light of its commercial success, production was transferred in the early 1930s to a larger factory in Asnières-sur-Seine. After becoming part of the Unilever group, the company was renamed Astra Calvé and developed or acquired leading brands in the fats and oils sector (Fruit d’Or, Végétaline, Puget, Bénédicta). The historic industrial site in Asnières was permanently closed by Unilever in June 2002. Seine-Maritime/Normandy
