SUPER-ABSINTHE BAILLY - c. 1900 Rare, original promotional absinthe fountain made of chiseled glass and nickel-plated metal. Approximately 51 cm tall and 27 cm wide, including the taps. In very good condition— 100% original, complete, and free of any restoration or reassembly. The glass decanter, free of chips or cracks, features its original, beautifully engraved decoration on the lower section and acid-etched lettering that is perfectly legible. Complete assembly, free of any restoration: original lid topped with an acorn-shaped knob, preserved internal filter, and four functional clover-shaped faucets (two of which are stuck). The entire unit rests on its period shower base. There is a tiny, insignificant surface scratch on the bowl and a few subtle signs of wear on the base, attesting to a superb authentic patina. The piece is sound, with no repairs. Founded in 1877 in Ornans and Montgesoye (Doubs/Burgundy-Franche-Comté), Bailly Frères is one of the major distilleries of the Belle Époque. The brand is famous for having patented, in 1891, a unique process for aging absinthe through exposure to light. On December 9, 1896, the Super-Absinthe Bailly trademark was registered, along with its famous clover-shaped logo. Operations ceased permanently following the ban on absinthe in 1915. THE ABSINTHE FOUNTAIN: UNDERSTANDING THE RITUAL - A signature feature of Belle Époque bistros (1900), the fountain was used to dispense ice-cold water drop by drop. This very slow trickle of water was essential for dissolving the sugar placed on the spoon and releasing the aromas of the “Green Fairy.” Models with four taps allowed several customers to prepare their drinks simultaneously. SHIPPING & PICKUP: Shipping is handled by service providers specializing in the care of works of art. For this collectible piece, purchasing their shipping insurance is strongly recommended. To ensure it remains in perfect condition during transit, the fountain will be shipped disassembled. The item may also be picked up free of charge at our gallery, with no storage fees. The final AI-generated ambiance photo is provided for illustrative purposes to help you appreciate the item’s proportions in context. Only the original photographs are authoritative.
