DELESPAUL-HAVEZ CHOCOLATE - c. 1935 A superb and rare original flat enamel advertising sign with folded edges and embossed design. This is the version manufactured by EAS before 1939 in the larger dimensions of 60.3 x 42.4 cm by the “Emaillerie Alsacienne Strasbourg.” In very good condition - This piece is particularly appealing due to its remarkably fresh appearance. The enamel is luminous, with vivid colors and excellent original luster. The piece still has its two original mounting eyelets at the top. There is very slight discoloration on the hair of the two children (nos. 6 and 8), as well as minor surface wear localized in the corners. - A truly beautiful piece - A true masterpiece of advertising art. Through this famous scene of children holding out their bowls, the illustrator skillfully guides the viewer’s gaze: the mouthwatering drips flow from the letters of the word “Chocolat,” inviting the passerby to follow a smooth line of sight that ends on the brand name. A straightforward, joyful, and deeply heartwarming composition that stands out as one of the great classics of decorative enamel signage. Founded in Lille in 1848 by Henri-Victor Delespaul and Amélie-Angélique Havez under the name “Au Parrain Généreux,” the Delespaul-Havez company established itself as a pioneer in the French chocolate industry. The company cemented its place in popular culture in 1954 with the creation of the legendary Carambar, born from a happy accident involving a machine that accidentally stretched out a caramel mixture.
