HUTCHINSON - c.1930 “Bicycle Tires—Motorcycle Tires” Stunning original lithographed advertising sheet metal. This is the smaller version, 32.5 cm in diameter. “S.P.A.P. Paris 8th” Featuring the knife sharpener “Sam” and his faithful dog “Floc,” drawn by “MICH” Jean Marie Michel Liébaux (not credited) - Remarkable condition - particularly rare to find in this condition. The colors are remarkably fresh, displaying vivid contrast and perfect reds. The piece as a whole has a superb luster. There are only very subtle traces of oxidation localized along the right edge, which do not affect the composition’s aesthetic appeal in any way. -A lovely collector’s item- Hutchinson was founded in 1853 in Châlette-sur-Loing, 100 km south of Paris, by Hiram Hutchinson. This American entrepreneur, a recent immigrant to France, had filed the first French patent for rubber vulcanization, which formed the basis for the company’s first product: “A l’Aigle” boots, designed to keep feet dry. In 1890, Hutchinson shifted to manufacturing bicycle tires. By 1905, Hutchinson had already turned his attention to the automotive sector. In 1910, Hutchinson entered the aeronautics industry.
