SHELL - 1955 Rare, original, double-sided enamel advertising sign cut into the shape of a scallop shell. Generous size: 99 x 96.5 cm. “S.F.F.E 4.55” In very good condition - This piece displays remarkable freshness. The original colors have retained all their intensity and brilliance. The surface has a high-quality sheen and perfectly preserved enamel depth. The plaque retains its four original mounting holes, three of which still have their brass eyelets. There are very slight, minor chips along the edges; these discreet chips in the enamel do not detract in any way from the superb aesthetic appeal of the design. A truly beautiful collector’s item. The name “Shell” first appeared in 1891 in connection with oil sold in the Far East by Marcus Samuel, a London merchant from a family that specialized in the trade of seashells, antiques, and more… The Shell Transport and Trading Company was founded in 1897 and adopted the scallop shell as its emblem in 1904. In 1907, its merger with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company—founded in the Netherlands in 1890—gave rise to the Royal Dutch Shell Group. In France, the group partnered in 1922 with Maison Deutsch de la Meurthe to create the Société des Pétroles Jupiter, which became Shell Française in 1948.
