AMORA - c.1935 “Dijon Mustard” Original polychrome advertising plaster sculpture in the round. 28 x 15.5 x 6.7 cm. “Plasto” Depicts a friendly chef licking his lips in a gesture of indulgence, standing on a terrace where there is a space for a glass (missing here). A beautiful piece typical of the advertising art of fine food stores from the interwar period. In good condition. - The colors are well-defined and vibrant; there are a few minor chips in the material and the glass is missing. This does not detract from the piece’s appeal. This advertising plaster sculpture is an original piece from the period. Founded in Dijon in 1919 by mustard maker Armand Bizouard, Amora became, under the leadership of Raymond Sachot in the 1930s, one of France’s leading brands of mustard and condiments. According to legend, its name originated from a remark by Bizouard: “It’s a love of mustard—it’ll be AMORA!” The brand enjoyed immense success, in particular, thanks to its famous reusable mustard jars—which doubled as tableware—revolutionizing the way mustard was marketed.
