SHELL - c.1930 “Motor Oil” Original flat, triangular, double-sided enamel advertising sign. 77.6 x 77.6 x 77.6 cm. In excellent condition— Both sides are uniform, with very good color and strong contrast, retaining a beautiful luster. A few minor, scattered chips in the enamel, with no noticeable impact on the visual appearance. A perforation in the upper corner, outside the illustration’s field. A particularly uniform and well-preserved piece. The name “Shell” first appeared in 1891 in connection with oil sold in the Far East by Marcus Samuel, a London merchant from a family that specialized in the trade of shells, antiques, and other items… The Shell Transport and Trading Company was founded in 1897 and adopted the scallop shell as its emblem in 1904. In 1907, its merger with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, founded in the Netherlands in 1890, gave rise to the Royal Dutch Shell Group. In France, the group partnered with Maison Deutsch de la Meurthe in 1922 to create the Société des Pétroles Jupiter, which became Shell Française in 1948.
