Friedrich Görtitz, Still Life with Wine Bottle A still life depicting a wine bottle wrapped in twine, a fruit bowl, a candle and a packet of cigarettes, arranged on a white tablecloth draped in folds, set against a suggested botanical background, pastose Impressionist painting in a bold style, oil on canvas, 1920, signed and dated ‘Görtitz (19)’ in the lower right-hand corner20”, minor imperfections, in a black and gold moulded frame, inner dimensions approx. 53 x 42.5 cm. Artist information: German painter (1890 Leipzig-Eutritzsch to 1973 Seeshaupt), 1904-08 apprenticeship as a decorative painter, 1911-15 Royal School of Applied Arts, Dresden, friendship with Otto Dix and Pol Cassel, 1916 Bronze Medal from the Royal School of Applied Arts, Dresden, 1915-17: military service; 1919-26: studied at the Leipzig Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade, under Professor Alois Kolb amongst others; 1926: Study trip to Italy; 1935: Moved from Leipzig to Berlin; 1943: Lost his Berlin studio and many works; from 1945: freelance artist in Seeshaupt.
