R. Gareis, Evening Birthday Serenade Against the backdrop of a summer night in the old town of what appears to be a Franconian town, singers have gathered in front of a venerable warehouse to perform a serenade before illuminated windows, a poetic, slightly impasto painting based on a motif painted in 1910 by Franz Frankl (1881 Affecking - 1940 Munich), reminiscent of Carl Spitzweg’s serenade paintings, oil on plywood panel, signed ‘R. Gareis’, with indistinct old annotations on the reverse: ‘… for Christmas 1924 Elslein & R… Gareis’, in need of minor restoration, wooden frame, dimensions approx. 44 x 35 cm.
