Artist information: Hungarian painter (1867 in Kecskemét - 1945 in Budapest), trained in Budapest under Bertalan Székely, later in Weimar under Max Thedy and in Paris under Adolphe William Bouguereau, from 1894 at Gyula Benczur’s master school in Budapest, member of the Szolnok artists’ colony, where he was a key figure, also a member of the Circle of Hungarian Impressionists and Naturalists (MIÉNK), withdrew from public life following the fall of the Hungarian Republic, though he continued to take part in exhibitions; a key representative of Hungarian ‘painting of the common people’; his works were repeatedly exploited for cultural and political purposes by various parties.
