Ludwig Dill, Fishing boat in Enkhuizen On a cloudy day, a fishing boat with its sail set, in front of the Drommedaris in the Dutch town of Enkhuizen; the Drommedaris is the former fortified gate of the local harbour, built in 1540, and is now regarded as the town’s landmark; fishing boats are one of the artist’s favourite subjects, oil on canvas mounted on board, signed lower right and dated (19)13, labelled and titled on the reverse, old label with the number ‘533’, a slip of paper on the board containing details of the artist’s biography, in need of cleaning, in a period frame, inner dimensions 43.5 x 55.5 cm. Artist’s biography: German landscape, battle and marine painter (1848, Gernsbach - 1940, Karlsruhe), spent his youth in Stuttgart; studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1862 to 1872 - interrupted by his military service as an officer in the 1870-71 war - before eventually switching to painting and studying at the Munich Academy from 1872 to 1874 under Johann Leonhard von Raab, Otto Seitz and Carl Theodor von Piloty, influenced by Adolf Lier; subsequently worked as a freelance artist in Munich; from 1874 onwards undertook numerous study trips, including to the south of France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy; in 1877 he found his favourite subject in Chioggia near Venice - the fishing boats on the lagoon; from 1878 to 1893 he spent his summers in Chioggia; in 1892 he was a founding member and president of the Munich Secession; In 1896, he moved to Dachau and founded the artists’ group ‘Die Dachauer’, alongside Adolf Hölzel, Arthur Langhammer and Fritz von Uhde; served as a German judge at the World’s Fairs in Chicago and Paris; from 1899 to 1919, he was a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy whilst continuing to spend his summers in Dachau; Honorary member of the Munich Academy; member of the Vienna and Berlin Secession; exhibited at all major national and numerous international exhibitions, including the Munich Glaspalast and, in 1938-39, the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich; honorary citizen of Dachau from 1936 and of Gernsbach from 1938, active in Munich, Venice, Dachau and Karlsruhe, amongst other places, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Saur, *Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon*; Dressler; Carl Thiemann, *Erinnerungen eines Dachauer Malers*; Mülfarth; and Wikipedia.
