Perret, The Bankrupt Merchant a merchant who has slumped to the floor from his overturned chair, his face etched with utter horror, leaning against a pile of packaged goods; beside him lie a cap and silver coins, as well as a table covered with a red cloth; a glazed, slightly impastoed historicising genre painting in dark colours, with deliberate lighting effects directing the viewer’s gaze to the merchant’s face filled with terror, oil on canvas, probably mid-19th century, signed ‘Perret’ in the lower right-hand corner and indistinctly dated ‘18...’, significant damage, in a richly decorated gold frame, inner dimensions approx. 46.5 x 55.5 cm.
