Alexander Frederick Rolfe, After the Hunt After the hunt, a grey horse and two dogs wait at the gate for the successful hunter’s return; in front of the door lie two dead birds and a hare, and next to the entrance are two more birds; in the corner, the shotgun is leaning against the wall; to the left, the long path into the forest is hinted at. In his depiction here, the British painter’s work comes very close to the animal paintings of Sir Edwin Landseer R.A., who was the most significant artist in this genre in Britain in the mid-19th century and is likely to have served as a model for this painting as well; oil on canvas, signed ‘A. F. Rolfe’ and dated 1866; minor restoration work visible; in a gilded frame; inner dimensions 76.5 x 64 cm . Artist information: British artist (probably 1814 to 1875, documented as active between 1839 and 1871), brother of the artist Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823 to 1881), landscape, hunting and still-life painter.
